2023 Cyber Security Training: Social Engineering Drill, Internet fraud

publish date : 2023-08-30
The computer center held an information security lecture in the computer classroom on Wednesday, July 19, 2023. The aim is to raise awareness about social engineering and data protection.

Teaching Assistant, Jia-Hung Huang delivered a session on "Social Engineering Drill" and invited Chao-Hwa Liu, an ISMS consultant to present on "Internet Fraud and Prevention," analyzing various fraud techniques and cases. The class was conducted through both physical classes and Webex simultaneously.

Common personality traits susceptible to internet fraud include being overly kind, greedy, or lacking friendships. Typical fraudulent methods encompass investment scams, fake online shopping and purchasing fraud, installment payment releases, identity guessing games, fake friendships, and romance scams, false job recruitment, and impersonating government officials.

To prevent fraud, it is essential to possess the following basic knowledge: distrust caller ID displays, consider any faxed official documents received at convenience stores as fraudulent, cultivate a habit of verification, disable installment settings on ATMs, and avoid private transactions in online shopping. Furthermore, adopting anti-fraud habits is crucial, summarized as "Listen, Hang up, Verify":

1. Listen attentively to what the caller is saying and take note of the content.
2. Immediately hang up after listening, preventing the scammer from manipulating your emotions further.
3. Dial 165, the anti-fraud consultation hotline, and verify the information gathered.

There were 35 staff and faculty members who took part in this event. Those who actively engaged throughout the training and passed the assessment received lifelong learning hours for civil servants. After the class, an online assessment was conducted, with a passing grade of 70 or higher.
